(BENICIA, Calif.) March 10, 2000 - InterHealth® Nutraceuticals, a leader in branded, proprietary nutritional ingredients, including ActiVin™ and CitriMax®, announces the introduction of Protykin®, a powerful new phytoestrogen for women experiencing midlife changes. Long valued for its antioxidant, cardioprotection and antimutagenic properties, recent research shows that Protykin® is a powerful plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) that can help women reduce hot flashes, balance mood swings and promote healthy bone density. Protykin® is a nutritional ingredient that will be found in major brands of menopausal and other women's dietary supplement formulas.
Phytoestrogens are substances in plants that mimic the effects of human estrogen. Recent studies show that the phytoestrogen in Protykin® bind to Human Estrogen Receptors, and increases estrogen-like activity in the body. One study found that these phytoestrogens increased bone mineral content and density in postmenopausal women receiving just 100 micrograms per day-1/400th the amount of phytoestrogen soy isoflavones typically recommended as a dietary supplement.
The phytoestrogens in Protykin® are structurally very similar to Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic form of estrogen commonly used in hormone replacement therapy. However, the phytoestrogens in Protykin® do not produce any of the side effects associated with DES such as liver and gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and certain types of cancer.
Another advantage of Protykin® is that previous research has demonstrated its value as an antioxidant that fights free radicals, promotes cardiovascular health and inhibits cellular events associated with the initiation, promotion and progression of cancer. Found in grapes and other plant foods, research suggests that the principal phytoestrogen in Protykin® is one of the substances in red wine responsible for the cardiovascular health benefits associated with the consumption of red wine. This may also help explain why Mediterranean women, whose wine consumption is significantly greater than that of most American women, have a much lower incidence of cardiovascular and estrogen-related problems.
Protykin® contains more than 1,000 times the amount of natural phytoestrogens available in wine or grape-derived products. A nutritional ingredient, Protykin® is now available to manufacturers for inclusion in dietary supplements and nutritional food and beverage products. For most women, four milligrams of phytoestrogens, as Protykin®, a day provides an effective dose.
"InterHealth's product development has always been research driven, so the new scientific evidence has spurred development of our high-potency Protykin® phytoestrogen supplement," stated Vice President of Sales and Marketing Michael Hogge. "As more and more women are approaching middle age, ameliorating the symptoms of menopause has become an issue of increasing importance. We, at InterHealth, are proud to be able to offer a safe, natural solution that lets women avoid the unpleasant side effects associated with some hormone replacement therapies."
